Marcus Mariota of the Eagles finds a new home.
In the midst of Monday’s excitement around free agency, the Philadelphia Eagles were linked to Justin Fields, the quarterback for the Chicago Bears, as a possible backup to Jalen Hurts.
Regardless of the veracity of the rumors, the Eagles must immediately assess their QB2 scenario in light of the news from Tuesday morning. Marcus Mariota, a free agency quarterback from the Eagles, is joining the Washington Commanders, according to reports from ESPN’s Adam Schefter.USA TODAY’s Mitch Stringer According to Schefter’s tweet, Former Eagles quarterback Marcus Mariota is signing with the Washington Commanders on a 1-year deal with a base value of $6 million and upside to $10 million. This past season, Mariota, 30, had four appearances, including the loss in the Wild Card playoffs. In addition to eight carries for 52 yards, he completed 15 of 23 passes for 164 yards, one touchdown, and one interception. The majority of this output occurred during Philly’s Week 16 loss to the New York Giants, 33-25.
Did Justin Fields get traded to the Eagles? I wouldn’t be shocked, the insider says. Mariota was signed by the Eagles in the summer to serve as Jalen Hurts’ backup, but he struggled in the preseason and in his meager regular-season action.. After an outstanding preseason, many supporters lobbied for rookie quarterback Tanner McKee to be the starting backup, but he never played in a regular-season game.
