URGENCY: Alcaraz Tennis carrier faces risk; As he may drop
out of Top 3 for first time in two years after Madrid Loss
Following his defeat at the 2024 Madrid Open, Carlos Alcaraz can fall out of the Top 3 in the ATP Rankings for the first time in two years.
Due to his remarkable 2024 season debut, the young Spanish talent only recently dropped out of the Top 2 when he was passed by Jannik Sinner. The 20-year-old might now fall out of the Top 3.
He successfully defended his win from the previous year at the 2024 Madrid Open, earning 1000 points. That was in addition to the 500 points he had already lost from withdrawing from the Barcelona Open, and his defeat in the Spanish capital guaranteed he would lose additional points.
Alcaraz’s points total will decrease to 7345 after a poor title defense in Madrid, costing him 800 points. That is well behind the top player in the world, Novak Djokovic, with 9990 points, and the second place player, Jannik Sinner, with 8860 points.
The two-time Grand Slam champion, however, has to look down as well as up right now since Daniil Medvedev is applying pressure to him from behind. The Russian player has 7195 points in the live rankings going into his 2024 Madrid Open quarterfinal matchup against Jiri Lehecka.
If Medvedev makes it to the semifinals, his 7395 points will put him ahead of Alcaraz. With the young Czech player as the opponent and the Russian as the favorite, Alcaraz is likely to drop a spot.
For the young player, there is good news as well. He will be the favorite to unseat Medvedev as the world no. 3 player if he is well enough to play in the 2024 Italian Open in Rome. This is because the Russian is likely to experience the same issues as Alcaraz did in Madrid.
Since Medvedev is the reigning champion in the Italian capital, Alcaraz has an ideal chance to tie the score because he is unable to gain any more points.
