Even with McLaren’s stronger form and lead, Alonso’s Aston Martin team is making every effort to maintain P4 in the constructors’ title.
With 49 points, McLaren is now tied with Aston Martin for second place in the standings after a very successful run of MCL60 improvements.
Oscar Piastri and Lando Norris from McLaren, who were demoted down the order for violating the Q3 track regulations, will not be able to contend with Alonso when he prepares to start from P4. But he believes that Aston Martin is now trailing in the fight.
He asserts that rather than merely giving McLaren credit, Aston Martin must now “understand” that the company will be eliminating its P4.
“I mean, they have the momentum now; they’re getting a lot of points, both cars, and they are incredibly powerful,” Alonso said to reporters during qualifying.

Alonso was, however, happy with his qualifying effort in Qatar, which looked to indicate a possible comeback considering that he had his best grid position since the Canadian Grand Prix.
