Why I rehired Ferrara…. Jannik Sinner
World No. 1 and Wimbledon champion Jannik Sinner has reinstated his former fitness coach Umberto Ferrara ahead of the Cincinnati Open and US Open. The move marks a significant shift in Sinner’s support team following a turbulent period related to a doping investigation.
Sinner had parted ways with Ferrara and physiotherapist Giacomo Naldi last year after testing positive for clostebol, a banned anabolic agent. The substance was traced to an over-the-counter spray used by Naldi—originally provided by Ferrara—during a massage session at Indian Wells in March 2024. An independent tribunal later cleared Sinner of any fault or negligence, and he served a three-month suspension earlier this year under a settlement with WADA.
The reappointment signals a renewed focus on “continuity and performance,” according to Sinner’s team. Despite previously expressing a lack of confidence in Ferrara and Naldi, Sinner now seems ready to reestablish trust with Ferrara, who had been working with Matteo Berrettini in the interim.
This staffing change follows Sinner’s split with other members of his team — trainer Marco Panichi and physio Ulises Badio — just before his Wimbledon triumph.
