McGaughey served as the Giants’ special teams coordinator from 2018 to 23. He previously played the same position for the New York Jets (2014), San Francisco 49ers (2015), and Carolina Panthers (2016–17). He had served as LSU’s special teams coordinator from 2011 to 2013.
This past season, the Giants’ special teams units were primarily ranked in the middle of the pack.

Some of the Patriots’ special teams units have had difficulties lately. Chad Ryland, a rookie kicker, has only made 16 of 25 field goals this season. In contrast, the NFL’s 31st-ranked punt return team was among the worst. Thanks to Jalen Reagor, the kickoff return squad concluded the season rated third in the NFL, and rookie punter Bryce Baringer performed admirably.
