Ange Postecoglou, the head coach of Tottenham Hotspur, has asserted that his days of supporting Liverpool are in the past and are comparable to his former fondness of the popular television program Happy Days.
Postecoglou was born in Greece, but at the age of five, he and his family moved to Australia.
During Postecoglou’s formative years, football was far from Australia’s most popular sport, and he acknowledged as much in a recent interview with Football Focus.
When talking about his relationship with his father, Postecoglou recalled: “We would watch games late at night, most of which were from England. We would only get just one football. Match Of The Day with Jimmy Hill. We wanted the video even though it had been available for a week. It all began there—a passion of football.
“I was a die-hard Liverpool supporter. Bill Shankly and “The Boot Room” were two things I adored.
He responded: “Well, I’ve taken the posters down, mate!” when asked if he was still a Liverpool supporter.
Tottenham has made rapid strides under Postecoglou’s leadership since his appointment in June; in their first six Premier League games, they have won four and drew two, while playing a fast and entertaining brand of football.
On Saturday night, they will host Liverpool in north London; the Reds are also unbeaten this year.
Postecoglou was once more questioned about his support for Liverpool at a pre-game press conference.
You could basically go one of two ways in the 1970s. At the time, it appeared like they only ever broadcast Liverpool or Manchester United games. A few of my closest friends joined Manchester United, so I switched teams to keep things fresh, he remarked.
I had the posters hanging on my wall like every other kid. My team was Liverpool, but as you get older, things change. Back then, I was a huge fan of Happy Days as well, but I don’t have any Fonzie posters up on my walls either. Simply put, that’s how life is.
