What’s next for the Lions after losing to 49ers?

On Monday, one day following his team’s devastating 34-31 loss to the San Francisco 49ers in the NFC Championship Game, head coach Dan Campbell of the Detroit Lions addressed the media.

While he acknowledged that his team lost by one game to the Super Bowl, Campbell expressed his pride in the progress his football team made this season and said it should serve as inspiration for them to return stronger in 2024.

The following are the main inquiries from Campbell’s final press conference of the year:

What went wrong on Sunday during the second half?

Almost everything, as far as Campbell was concerned.

The Lions led by 17 points at the half, but at one point in the second half, they gave up 27 straight points. According to Campbell, for a football game to end with a lead like that, around twelve things must go wrong in the final thirty minutes of play.

He stated that catastrophes are what you hear about on a regular basis. In all three phases, we made mistakes on all 12 of those.

All season long, Detroit has been so strong because its three units can compensate for each other’s shortcomings. However, on Sunday, during the second half, all three phases performed poorly as a unit. The Lions players were clearing out their lockers on Monday in order to accomplish something that hasn’t happened much this season—namely, to do it against a more seasoned opponent like the 49ers.

One thing Campbell stated his players will take away from Sunday is the importance of every play in a football game and how unpredictable it can be in terms of its potential to win or lose. He believes that after going through this, the next time they find themselves in that situation, they will be able to get themselves out.

Now that GM Brad Holmes and Campbell have built the core of this team, what’s next?

Campbell said it’s still about talent acquisition and adding competition. That will never change for them, but he also talked about continuing to add like-minded individuals to the core they have.

The whole point was to create a core that had certain standards, he said. Obviously, they have to be good players, and we have that, but they have to be a certain way. There has to be a certain mindset and certain identity, and we have that in our core, and we have to add pieces that are likeminded.”

Campbell said there’s no level of talent worth bringing in that isn’t about what he and the locker room are about. He said they have to start over in the spring and have the same urgency they did this season and can’t let complacency set in because they made the NFC Championship, or they’ll become just an average football team.
